Iceland is an adventure for all seasons, and winter is no exception! This 6-day journey takes you from the natural diversity of the South Coast to the colorful capital city, with the freedom to explore South Iceland’s top attractions and hidden gems at your own pace. With moderate daily driving distances and accommodation in small towns across the countryside, you’ll also have the opportunity to engage in outdoor pursuits like quad-biking, hiking, snowmobiling or horseback riding.

This package includes rental car of your choice (AWD recommended for winter) and accommodation in Selfoss, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Hella and Reykjavik.

Day 1: Blue Lagoon & Tastes of the Sea

On arrival to Keflavík Airport in Iceland, collect your rental car and head to the first highlight of your tour: The Blue Lagoon, where you can soak in the soothing geothermal waters to unwind after your flight.

From there, drive to Hveragerði, a year-round horticultural center that operates on geothermal energy,  where you will stay the night. In the evening, we recommend a visit to the seaside town Stokkseyri for an exquisite lobster feast. Driving distance: 102 km / 64 miles.

Day 2: Waterfalls & Volcanic Beaches

Drive to the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, looking their best in their winter coats. On the way, you'll pass the infamous  Eyjafjallajökull glacier. Near Skógar, you have the option of taking a guided walk or snowmobiling tour on Sólheimajökull glacier where it descends from the highlands.

Then continue onwards to the charming village of Vík, famous for its black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and the rock formations of Dyrhólaey and Reynisdrangar off the coast. End the day in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Driving distance: 273 km / 170 miles.

Spend the night in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.

Day 3: Surrounded by Glaciers

Spend the morning at Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park, a place of great natural beauty with many interesting hiking trails, including one that leads to the remarkable Svartifoss waterfall. Skaftafell is also an ideal setting for optional activities like guided glacier walks or ice climbing.

Later, head to the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and view the floating icebergs by the glow of the setting sun. Return to Kirkjubæjarklaustur in the evening. Driving distance: 250 km / 155 miles.

Spend another night in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.

Day 4: Leisurely Day along the Coast

Enjoy the remarkable area around Vetnajökull National park and the scenery along the South Coast. Worthwhile stops along the way include the “elf cliffs” at Dverghamrar or spend more time at interesting areas you passed before, like Dyrhólaey and Reynistdrangar near Vík. Driving distance: 155 km / 96 miles.

Day 5: Golden Circle

Begin the day with a drive to the Flúðir area, where vegetables are grown year round in geothermally heated greenhouses, and then onwards to the sights along the famous Golden Circle route. Your first stop is the majestic Gullfoss waterfall followed by the hot springs at the Haukadalur geothermal area.

Next, head to Laugarvatn, an unusual lake with subsurface hot springs, where we recommend a stop at the Fontana thermal baths before heading to Þingvellir National Park, a place of unique geology and site of Iceland’s ancient assembly grounds.

Later, after arriving to Reykjavik and settling in at your accommodation, visit some of the city's many attractions with a stroll around the colorful, historic downtown. The city center also offers a great selection of restaurants as well as a renowned nightlife and live music scene. Driving distance: 200 km / 124 miles.

Day 6: Departure

After six great days of exploring South Iceland, the time has come to say goodbye to this amazing destination. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can spend the morning exploring one of the city’s museums, art galleries or shops. You might also enjoy a tour of the city’s brand new Harpa concert hall.

Note: Additional nights can be added in Reykjavík on request.

Our rental car selection

We‘ve partnered with one of Iceland’s most reliable and efficient car rental agencies to offer top-notch service and a great selection of high-quality, dependable vehicles.

Automatic cars are available on request for an extra fee in types A, B and C. Please contact us for prices.

All rentals include a standard insurance policy with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), unlimited mileage, GPS, free in-car unlimited wi-fi, two drivers and Icelandic VAT @ 25.5%. Fuel or oil is not included. Optional insurance upgrades, additional drivers and child seats are available and payable locally at the car rental office.

Collecting your vehicle

On arrival to Keflavík Airport, a representative of the car rental agency will be waiting for you at the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name on it. You and all travellers in your party will then be shuttled to the car rental office, just a 1 minute ride from the airport. There, you will complete all paperwork and choose among optional services or upgrades before collecting your vehicle. On the day of departure, you will return the vehicle to the same car rental office at Keflavík Airport.

 A valid credit card is required by the car rental agency, and a credit card imprint will be taken at the time of vehicle collection for security reasons. Your voucher covers the cost of the rental, but the imprint may be used to deduct any extra charges due to use or damage of the vehicle.

Please note: if your departure flight is more than 2 hours later in the day than your arrival flight, your car rental period will exceed the number of days included in your holiday package. In such case, we would need to charge for an extra day with the rental car. Contact us for details.

Booking

After booking a holiday package with Icelandguest.com, you will be contacted by email within two working days by your designated travel consultant, who will assist with your booking and serve as your point of contact for any travel needs during your stay. The email will include the full name and direct contact information for your travel consultant along with information about your booking, payment and what to expect during your holiday.

We recommend booking at least three weeks in advance.

Delivery of travel documents

Travel documents will be delivered as follows:

  • At time of deposit payment: You will receive the pro-forma invoice by email.
  • Within 30 days of deposit payment: You will receive the full itinerary by email.
  • At time of full payment: You will receive the confirmation invoice and all vouchers by email.
  • Before your arrival*: Road map and information booklet about driving in Iceland will be sent by post

Please note that we must use the billing address of the credit card holder as the shipping address for the road map and information booklet. *If the package is booked less than one month in advance of departure, you will instead receive these items at your first accommodation in Reykjavík.
